Introduction
Becoming a writer is easy, but " making it big” is much harder. In today's article, I wanted to take you through the small steps of applying to become a writer for various publications on Medium.
If you are an experienced writer on Medium, this article will not be for you but feel free to stick around if you would like to!
Join Us
Many publications have a “Join us” or “Write for us” link in the title of their publication, just like the example below.
If you discover an option like this is unavailable, it will likely be in the “About” section. Click here to find out more, or the publication may not be taking on any additional writers.
How To Apply
Publications have various ways in which you can apply to be a writer. You must read the page in full to understand how to apply. If you simply skim-read or do not follow the instructions, you and the publication owner will get frustrated.
Please respect their request and read the page fully
Most publication owners ask you to request to become a writer in the comments section, like the picture below.
It is now becoming more common for some of the Medium size and above publications to request you fill out a form to apply and give them an example of your work to assess first.
An example is below, where my publication New Writers Welcome, has not taken on that stance. This aims to tighten up on quality for the readers and help the editors who have to ask for writers to follow the basic format rules that they should already be adhering to.
Confused?
If you are feeling confused by all of this, I have created a YouTube video for you to watch instead. I run a channel based on Medium & writing, so be sure to check it out.
