Introduction
It is my worst nightmare: someone breaks into my house at night and takes one of my children. I am asleep and hear nothing until the morning.
Well, this is a story of a nightmare that came nearly true!
Setting The Scene
I recently left work feeling extremely ill. My throat felt full of razor blades, my head was throbbing, and I could hardly breathe due to what I assumed was a bad flu.
I arrived home around 7 pm on Saturday night and went straight to bed. My wife said she would make some food and give me a shout when it was ready. I woke sweating from every orifice on Sunday around 4 pm, yes that is 21 hours of sleep.

Out Of It
I needed to shower, and my wife, bless her, brought me foot to the bedroom (which is against our house rules), and I ate maybe 25% of it and fell back to sleep.
I must have been out of it as I was hardly awake on Monday, meaning I missed a day at work (which is unheard of). In the evening, my throat started to get better, but I still felt horrendous headaches and almost felt as if I was dreaming.
Nothing seemed to go at normal speeds, and I felt like I was drifting, even though I was still in my bed.
The Night It Happened
I took another day off on Tuesday, but I woke up, showered, and got changed by 1 pm (don’t judge me!). I was just left with headaches and a blocked nose, but I was feeling 90% better.
At this point, I had not left the house for three days, feeling a bit weak; walking around the house was an effort, but I made some dinner and got plenty of fluid down me.
My wife got the girls from school, and they were delighted to see me awake. They happily told me all about their day at school. After our evening meal, we all decided an early night was in order. I intended to go back to work the following day.
Going To Bed
I live in a cul-de-sac with only eight houses. I have security cameras around my house, and you must go through two doors to enter my house. We live in a quiet neighbourhood, and crime is extremely low.
My two girls, four and six, respectively, went upstairs around 7 pm, brushed their teeth and got into bed; as usual, they both read a book before putting on a sleep story to help send them to Noddy Land.
My wife and I headed up a few hours later to check on the girl, then headed to bed ourselves. So far, so good…….
Daddy, There Is A Man In My Room
Around 3 am on Wednesday morning, my wife and I were woken by our six-year-old screaming at the top of her voice and crying, “Daddy, there is a man in my room,” my heart sank, and I almost hesitated in disbelief.
I got out of bed and ran into her room. She was sat upright, pointing at her wardrobe.
“He is in there, daddy the man is in there”
In the meantime, my wife rushed into our four-year-old room to make sure she was ok; she was crying due to being scared at what her sister had shouted.
I clenched my fist and opened the first door, but he was not there. I opened the second door, but he was not there either, so I took a deep breath and prepared myself for a fight. Opening the third door, I launched with my fists……..
Where Did He Go?
I turned to my daughter, “he is not there?”
“Yes, he stood over me and pulled my covers back, so I screamed, and he ran into the wardrobe to hide.”
In a rage, I checked the rest of her bedroom and every other room in the house. No one was there, so I checked the doors and windows, but nothing suspicious.
I checked my security cameras, no sign of anyone…….
I went to speak to my daughter, who was still adamant that a man was in her room. I can only put this down to a horrible nightmare or maybe a ghost.

What Really Happened?
I will never really know what happened that night, and I am extra careful about ensuring we are secure before going to sleep at night.
I can tell you that would be any parent's worst nightmare. I thought it was a Liam Neeson moment from the film “TAKEN.” Thankfully, it never came to that, and everyone was safe, if not a little traumatised from the situation.
